This is not a standard Bladnoch you can simply replace from the shelf. Waterfall Batch 1 was released in 2020 as the very first bottling in Bladnoch’s five-part Waterfall Collection, created under Master Distiller Dr Nick Savage and released in extremely limited numbers. Only 1,000 bottles of Batch 1 were produced, making this the bottle that started the entire series.
The Waterfall Collection was designed as a sequence of annual releases exploring the craft behind Bladnoch’s whisky making, with each release forming part of a continuing story. The series has now been completed and succeeded by Bladnoch’s new Wave Collection, meaning Batch 1 belongs to a finished chapter of the distillery’s history.
Created using whisky matured in ex-Bourbon and Oloroso Sherry casks, Batch 1 brings together the brighter, fruit-driven character associated with Bladnoch and the deeper richness of sherry maturation. It was bottled at a substantial 48.8% ABV, at natural colour and without chill filtration, allowing the whisky to retain its full character and texture.
Expect raisins, fresh lemon and delicate orange peel on the nose, followed by dried apricot and lemon cake across the palate. The finish is medium in length, balancing sweetness and freshness with a gentle warming spice. It is a beautifully composed Lowland malt, but the real appeal here is what surrounds the liquid: first release, tiny production run and the beginning of one of Bladnoch’s most distinctive modern collections.
