Most of the whiskies in the Vault come from Scotland, but this one comes from Japan, from a craft distillery with a cult following among collectors.
The Akuto family has been making drinks for almost 400 years. Their sake brewery was founded in the city of Chichibu in 1625. In the 1940s the family business moved to Hanyu, where Ichiro Akuto's grandfather set up a whisky distillery.
Ichiro Akuto studied at the Tokyo University of Agriculture, worked at Suntory, and joined the family firm in 1999. When the business was sold in 2004, Hanyu's whisky was at risk, so Ichiro bought most of the remaining casks himself and set up his own company to sell them and build a new distillery.
Chichibu distillery, in Ichiro's home town of Chichibu in Saitama Prefecture, ran its first spirit in February 2008. It was the first Japanese distillery in 35 years to receive a new whisky production licence. The team malts some of its own barley, has washbacks made from Japanese mizunara oak, and runs its own on-site cooperage. A bigger sister distillery, Chichibu II, opened nearby in 2019.
Chichibu's whiskies have won World's Best titles at the World Whiskies Awards seven times between 2017 and 2025. Ichiro was named Master Blender of the Year at the International Spirits Challenge in 2019, and entered Whisky Magazine's Hall of Fame in 2024.
Chichibu has long been championed by The Whisky Exchange in London. The London Edition was first bottled to celebrate The Whisky Exchange's autumn whisky show, and is now released each year as a tribute to the city. Every edition combines a different set of casks.
The 2023 edition brings together casks aged between 5 and 9 years, from red wine and bourbon casks selected by Ichiro Akuto. It is bottled at 51.5% ABV, non-chill filtered and without added colour, and only 1,949 bottles were made.
