When The Keeper rests, W watches the Vault.
Talisker was founded in 1830 by brothers Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill, who took the lease of Talisker House from Clan MacLeod and opened their distillery in 1831. It stands at Carbost, on the shore of Loch Harport on the Isle of Skye, and today it is the only distillery still working on the island.
In 1960 a fire in the stillhouse destroyed the distillery. When Talisker was rebuilt, five exact replicas of the old stills were made, so the whisky would keep its original character. Today the distillery is owned by Diageo.
Talisker runs five stills: two wash stills and three spirit stills. Instead of modern condensers, it still uses traditional worm tubs, long coiled copper pipes sitting in cold water, which are believed to give a fuller, heavier spirit. Its malt is peated to around 18 to 22 parts per million, and its water runs over peat from Cnoc nan Speireag, or Hawk Hill.
Talisker has some famous fans. The writer Robert Louis Stevenson called it "the king o' drinks" in his poem The Scotsman's Return From Abroad.
Talisker Skye was announced in 2015 as a tribute to the island's wild landscape and coastline. It is a no-age-statement single malt, matured in refill and toasted American oak casks, with a slightly higher share of toasted casks than the classic Talisker 10. It is bottled at 45.8% ABV.
The result is a softer, sweeter Talisker than the 10 Year Old or the punchier Storm, but still unmistakably smoky and full of the sea. Diageo described the taste as like walking through a pine forest on a warm, sunny day on Skye.
