Islay's oldest distillery
Bowmore is said to be the oldest working distillery on Islay, and one of the oldest in Scotland. It was established in 1779 by a local merchant, John P. Simson, on the south-eastern shore of Loch Indaal in the town of Bowmore. More than two centuries later, it still sits right on the water's edge.
Whisky made the old way
Bowmore is one of the few distilleries in Scotland that still keeps its own traditional floor maltings. Barley is spread across the malting floor and dried over Islay peat on site, which gives Bowmore part of its smoky character. Water comes from the River Laggan, and the spirit is fermented in wooden washbacks before passing through two wash stills and two spirit stills.
The No. 1 Vaults
Bowmore's famous No. 1 Vaults warehouse sits below sea level on the shore of Loch Indaal. Casks mature in cool, damp, salty coastal air, and that sea influence is part of what people taste in a Bowmore.
A distillery that went to war
Production stopped during both World Wars. During the Second World War, RAF Coastal Command used the site, flying boats from Loch Indaal on anti-submarine patrols over the Atlantic.
Owners through the years
Bowmore passed through several families and firms after Simson, including the Mutter family, J.B. Sheriff & Co., and William Grigor & Son. In 1951 it came under Stanley P. Morrison's company, the start of Morrison Bowmore. Suntory bought Morrison Bowmore in 1994, and the distillery is now part of Suntory Global Spirits.
A distillery that warms the town
Waste heat from distilling is used to warm the town's public swimming pool, which was built inside a former Bowmore warehouse.
Bowmore 12 Year Old
Bowmore 12 is the distillery's classic, everyday Islay single malt, bottled at 40% ABV. Sherry casks add a rich, fruity side to the house style. It's smoky, but more gently so than many of its Islay neighbours, and the distillery itself sums up its style as "vanilla ice cream on a campfire."
In the glass
- Smoke: gentle Islay peat, never overpowering
- Fruit and sweetness: citrus and honey
- Coast: a maritime, slightly salty edge
- Finish: warming spice with soft smoke and oak
