Bruichladdich was built in 1881 by three brothers, William, John and Robert Harvey, on the shore of Loch Indaal on the Rhinns of Islay. For more than a century it made whisky quietly, until its owners closed it in 1994.
When a group of investors led by Mark Reynier reopened the distillery in 2001, with Islay legend Jim McEwan as master distiller, they inherited warehouses full of casks laid down before the closure. This bottle comes from that old stock: whisky distilled in 1992, two years before the stills fell silent.
A valinch is the long tube distillers use to draw whisky straight out of a cask. At Bruichladdich, it also gives its name to a special kind of bottling. Each Valinch release is drawn from a single cask, filled by hand at cask strength, and given its own label and title, usually marking a person or an event. Traditionally they were sold only to visitors at the distillery, which is why they are so rarely seen elsewhere.
Bruichladdich's Laddie Crew Valinch series celebrates the people who work at the distillery, with each bottling named after a member of the team.
This bottle is the 11th release in the staff series and honours Raymond Tibbs, a retail assistant and tour guide at the distillery.
The whisky was distilled in 1992 and matured for 22 years, mostly in American oak before a finish in a Calvados cask (cask no. 002 R10/177). Calvados is an apple brandy from Normandy, so the cask adds an orchard-fruit twist. It was bottled in 2015 at a cask strength of 49.9% ABV in a 50cl bottle, and only 618 bottles were filled.
This is a single-cask bottling with no official tasting notes. Expect Bruichladdich's unpeated, fruity style, deepened by 22 years in wood, with a touch of apple from the Calvados finish.
