Description

🥃 CRAGGANMORE DISTILLERS EDITION

A beautifully rich and complex Speyside single malt, Cragganmore Distillers Edition takes the distillery’s famously elegant character and adds an indulgent extra layer through a second maturation in Port-seasoned casks.

The Port influence brings extra depth and fruitiness to Cragganmore’s naturally malty style, balancing its delicate smoke with layers of ripe fruit, sweetness and warming oak.

Bottled at 40% ABV, expect a sweet and malty nose with juicy fruit and a subtle hint of smoke, followed by layers of rich plum, dried fruit, vanilla, oak and dark chocolate. The finish is medium to long, becoming gently dry with lingering vanilla, cocoa and mature oak.

Part of the prestigious Distillers Edition range and released in limited quantities, this is a cracking bottle for anyone who enjoys classic Speyside whisky with a richer, fruitier twist.

A distillery built for the railway

Cragganmore was founded in 1869 by John Smith at Ballindalloch, in the heart of Speyside, on land leased from Sir George Macpherson-Grant of the Ballindalloch Estate. Smith chose the spot for two reasons: fresh spring water from the Craggan Burn, and the brand-new Strathspey Railway running right past it.

Cragganmore was the first Speyside distillery built next to the railway, with its own siding from Ballindalloch station. That meant casks, coal and barley could be moved quickly, at a time when most distilleries still relied on horse and cart. The steam train on today's label remembers the first "Whisky Special" in 1887, which carried 16,000 gallons of whisky out of Ballindalloch. The old line is now part of the Speyside Way walking route.

The man too big for the train

John Smith was one of the most experienced distillers of his day. Before Cragganmore he had worked at several Speyside distilleries, including managing Macallan and helping to run Glenlivet and Glenfarclas. Some even believe he was the son of George Smith, the founder of Glenlivet, though that has never been proven.

He was also famously large. Smith is said to have weighed around 22 stone, too big to fit through a carriage door, so he travelled in the guard's van instead. It is one reason he was so keen to build his distillery right beside the line.

Unusual stills, complex whisky

Cragganmore's secret lies in its stillhouse. Its two small spirit stills have flat tops instead of the usual swan necks, and they still use old-fashioned worm tubs (long copper coils in tanks of cold water) to cool the spirit. The flat tops trap the vapour, so much of it is distilled again and again before it escapes. The result is a whisky known for being unusually complex: malty, fruity and gently smoky all at once.

A Classic Malt

For most of its history Cragganmore quietly went into blends, and blenders rated it among the very best. In 1988 it was chosen as the Speyside representative in the Classic Malts, a collection of six single malts picked to show off Scotland's main whisky regions. Today the distillery is owned by Diageo.

The Distillers Edition

The Distillers Edition takes classic Cragganmore and gives it a second chapter. After maturing in oak, the whisky is moved into casks seasoned with Port, the rich, sweet fortified wine from Portugal, for a further period of maturation. This "double maturation" layers ripe red fruit and gentle sweetness over Cragganmore's malty, complex spirit. It is bottled at 40% ABV and released as a dated edition, so each year's bottling is slightly different.

In the glass

  • Nose: sweet and malty, with juicy fruit and a subtle hint of smoke
  • Palate: plum, dried fruit, vanilla, oak and dark chocolate
  • Finish: medium to long and gently dry, with vanilla, cocoa and mature oak
