A distillery at the edge of Scotland
Highland Park sits in Kirkwall on Orkney, off Scotland's far north coast. Its story begins in 1798 with Magnus Eunson, a butcher and church officer by day and an illicit distiller and smuggler by night, who was caught making whisky illegally on the site. The distillery received its official licence in 1826 and is now owned by the Edrington Group, which also owns The Macallan.
Heather, peat and sherry
Highland Park uses local Orkney peat, which contains more heather than peat from many other parts of Scotland. That gives the whisky a sweet, floral, honeyed smoke rather than a medicinal one. Most Highland Park is matured in sherry-seasoned casks, which is what makes Twisted Tattoo such a departure.
A whisky with a twist
Released in March 2019, Twisted Tattoo broke from the house style. Instead of sherry, part of the whisky was matured in casks seasoned with Spanish Rioja red wine, then married with whisky from first-fill ex-bourbon casks. Highland Park's own description mentions 153 Rioja-seasoned casks combined with 70 first-fill bourbon casks. The result is bottled at 16 years old and 46.7% ABV.
The serpent that circles the world
The name and design come from Norse mythology and the Midgard Serpent, a sea creature that grew so large it wrapped around the whole world and bit its own tail. Orkney was ruled by Norse earls for centuries, and Highland Park has long celebrated that Viking heritage in its whiskies.
Inked by a Danish tattoo artist
To bring the serpent to life, Highland Park worked with Colin Dale, a Danish tattoo artist who runs the studio Skin & Bone. Dale specialises in non-electric dot-work and helps revive ancient Nordic, Native American and Inuit tattooing traditions. His design wraps around the packaging like the serpent around the earth.
At launch
Twisted Tattoo went on sale in the UK and most global markets on 25 March 2019. In the UK it was sold exclusively through The Whisky Shop at £80, with US sales following that summer.
