Instant Win Competitions UK: How They Work and Where to Enter?

Quick answer: An instant win competition is a prize draw where some ticket numbers are set as winners before the draw opens. If your ticket number matches one, you win straight away, without waiting for the main draw. In the UK you can also enter for free by post, with the same chance of winning.

Instant win competitions are one of the most popular ways to enter prize draws in the UK. Instead of waiting days for a draw, you find out in seconds whether you’ve won cash, site credit or a prize.

This guide explains how instant wins work, how to enter free, which UK sites run them, and what to check before you enter.

How do instant win competitions work?

Most UK instant win competitions follow the same five steps:

  1. The winning numbers are set first. Before the competition opens, the site chooses which ticket numbers will win instant prizes. Many sites show the list of instant prizes, and some show which numbers have already been claimed.
  2. You enter. You buy one or more tickets, or send a free postal entry.
  3. Your ticket numbers are allocated at random. You don’t pick them, so nobody can choose the winning numbers.
  4. You find out straight away. If one of your numbers matches an instant win number, the prize is yours, usually paid as cash or site credit, or sent out.
  5. The main draw still happens. Most instant win competitions also have a main prize, drawn at random when the competition closes. Your tickets stay in that draw too.

Some competitions advertise a “prize every time”: every ticket wins something, even if it’s only a small amount of site credit. Read the prize list to see what most tickets actually win.

You can see this in practice in how our iPhone Duo draw works, instant wins included.

Can you enter instant win competitions for free?

Yes, on most UK sites. A paid prize draw needs either a genuine free way to enter or a real skill test to stay legal without a gambling licence, and most instant win sites use a free postal route. We explain the law in more detail in our guide to how UK prize draws stay legal.

The UK government’s Voluntary Code of Good Practice for Prize Draw Operators goes further for instant wins. It says instant win draws must have equivalent free and paid routes, and that every entry, free or paid, should have an equal chance of winning each prize.

In practice:

  • Each site’s terms explain how to send a free postal entry, usually your name, contact details and the competition name on a card or envelope.
  • A free postal entry is given a ticket number like a paid one, so it can land on an instant win number too.
  • Free entries usually need to arrive before the competition closes, so post early.

Some sites also run separate “free to enter” competitions online, such as free daily tickets or new-customer offers. These are different from the free postal route, which applies to every paid competition.

How to pick a fair instant win competition

Before you enter, check these six things:

  1. The instant prize list. It should show every instant prize and how many there are. Some sites also show which have already been won.
  2. The ticket cap. Instant wins are set against a fixed number of tickets. If you know the cap and the number of instant prizes, you can work out your chances.
  3. The free entry route. It should be easy to find before you pay, and free entries should be able to win instant prizes too.
  4. What “prize every time” really means. If every ticket wins, most prizes will be small amounts of site credit. Check the list.
  5. Credit or cash. Find out whether instant wins are paid as cash, site credit you can only spend on tickets, or physical prizes.
  6. A registered company and published winners. Look up the company on Companies House and check the site lists real winners.

Set a budget. Instant wins are designed to be quick and exciting, which makes it easy to keep entering. Decide what you’re happy to spend before you start, and treat any win as a bonus.
