Macallan 1926 Sells for £2.1m at the First Ever Distillery Auction

One hundred years after it was distilled, a bottle of The Macallan 1926 has come home to Speyside, and sold for £2,125,000.

The sale took place on Friday 9 October 2026 at The Macallan Estate. It was the first auction ever held at the distillery, run by Sotheby’s in the same place where the spirit was made a century ago.

The price makes it the second most expensive bottle of whisky ever sold at auction in pounds, and the most expensive ever in US dollars (about $2.8 million). Here’s what sold, why the Macallan 1926 is the most famous whisky in the world, and how this result compares with the records before it.

Macallan 1926 Sells for £2.1m at the First Ever Distillery Auction

What Sold – Macallan 1926 Fine & Rare 60 Year Old

The bottle was The Macallan 1926 Fine & Rare, 60 Years Old. It comes from one of the most famous casks in whisky history: cask 263, a sherry-seasoned oak cask that held spirit distilled at Macallan in 1926.

The whisky stayed in that cask for 60 years. It was bottled in 1986, and the cask gave just 40 bottles. Macallan then dressed them in different ways:

  • 12 bottles with a label by pop artist Sir Peter Blake
  • 12 bottles with a label by Italian painter Valerio Adami
  • Up to 14 bottles with the Fine & Rare label, the kind sold this month
  • 2 bottles left unlabelled, one of which was later hand-painted by Irish artist Michael Dillon

So every Macallan 1926 that comes to auction is one of only 40 ever made, which is why each sale makes headlines around the world.

Sotheby’s had valued this bottle at £1.7m to £2.2m before the sale. It sold near the top of that range. The buyer has not been named.

First Ever Auction at The Macallan Distillery

The sale was called Live from The Macallan Estate. It marked 100 years since the 1926 spirit was distilled, and it was the first time an auction had ever been held at the distillery itself.

It was a small, invitation-only event. Around 50 leading whisky collectors were in the room, with others bidding online and by phone from around the world. Jonny Fowle, Sotheby’s global head of whisky and spirits, led the sale. He said the result showed “the enduring fascination that The Macallan 1926 inspires among collectors”.

The 1926 bottle was the star, but it wasn’t the only big result:

The Macallan 1926 Fine & Rare 60 Years Old£2,125,000
The Macallan in Lalique Six Pillars Collection (complete set)£350,000
The Macallan Romantica Collection Artists’ Edition£162,500
The Macallan The Reach 81 Years Old£131,250
The Macallan in Lalique Golden Age of Travel Ocean Liner£106,250

All 42 lots sold, for a total of £3.3 million against an estimate of £2.4m to £3.2m. 86% of lots sold above their top estimate. Money from the Romantica Collection went to three charities: Graeae Theatre Company, Cancer Research UK and Associazione VIDAS.

Why the Macallan 1926 Keeps Breaking Records

No whisky has a sales history like it. These are the biggest auction results for bottles from cask 263 since 2018:

DateLabelAuction housePrice
Oct 2018Valerio AdamiBonhams, Edinburghabout £848,000
Nov 2018Michael Dillon (hand-painted)Christie’s, London£1.2m, the first £1m whisky
Oct 2019Fine & RareSotheby’s, London£1.5m
Nov 2023Valerio AdamiSotheby’s, London£2,187,500, still the world record
Oct 2026Fine & RareSotheby’s, The Macallan Estate£2,125,000

Across these five sales, over eight years, the price has more than doubled. This month’s bottle beat the 2019 Fine & Rare record by £625,000, and it came within £62,500 of the all-time record set in 2023.

What makes it so special comes down to four things:

  • Age. Sixty years in a sherry cask is extremely rare. Most whisky is bottled after 10 to 25 years.
  • Rarity. Only 40 bottles were ever made, and no more can be.
  • Art. The Blake, Adami and Dillon labels make each bottle a piece of art history as well as whisky history.
  • Provenance. Every bottle can be traced straight back to one cask at one distillery, in a single year.

What This Sale Means for Whisky Collectors

This result shows that demand for the very rarest Scotch is still strong. A full room, bidders from around the world, and a Fine & Rare bottle selling for £625,000 more than the last one in 2019 all point the same way.

It also shows the pull of provenance. Holding the sale at The Macallan Estate, 100 years after the spirit was made, gave collectors a story no saleroom in London could match. Sotheby’s now holds the top three auction prices ever paid for whisky.

For most whisky lovers, though, a Macallan 1926 will only ever be a picture. The good news is that you don’t need a seven-figure budget to own something special from Macallan.
